Owens played football at Florida A&M University and served in the US Army.

He suffered injuries to both knees and his left ankle during a parachute jump at Fort Bragg, NC in 1952 which left him handicapped.

Owens turned professional in 1967 and joined the PGA Tour in 1970.

Owens played on the PGA Tour for seven years and won the 1971 Kemper Asheville Open, which is a “satellite” PGA Tour event.

Owens played with a limp and played all golf shots cross-handed, meaning he swung the golf club with his forward hand lower than the following hand.

The best year of his professional career was in 1986, while on the Senior PGA Tour. Owens won twice in three tournaments, and finished eighth on the money list with $207,813.

Because of his disability, Owens was allowed to use a cart while competing in most tocharles owen belly putterurnaments. He staged a protest at the 1987 US Senior Open because the USGA had banned carts at that event.

In 1987, he won the Ben Hogan Award and was inducted into the African American Golfers Hall of Fame in 2007.
